Urinary health after 50: habits and supplements with real research
Getting up at night, a weaker stream, feeling you didn't fully empty: these become common in men after 50. Here's what to check first, what helps day to day, and what the supplement research says.
First: get the cause checked
The most common cause is a benign enlarged prostate (BPH), but infections, bladder problems, diabetes, medications and prostate cancer can cause similar symptoms. A doctor's visit, often with a simple urine test and exam, is the right first step.
Get care right away if you see blood in your urine, have pain, fever or chills, or can't urinate at all.
Everyday habits that help
- Drink most of your fluids earlier in the day and less in the two hours before bed.
- Cut back on caffeine and alcohol, especially in the evening.
- "Double voiding": after urinating, wait a few seconds and try again.
- Pelvic floor exercises can improve control; a physiotherapist can teach them.
- Ask your doctor to review medications (some decongestants, antihistamines and diuretics affect urination).
- Stay active and keep a healthy weight.
What research says about popular supplement ingredients
| Beta-sitosterol | A Cochrane review found improved symptoms and urine flow in men with mild to moderate BPH; long-term effects unknown. |
|---|---|
| Pumpkin seed | In the 12-month GRANU trial (1,431 men), the extract was no better than placebo; whole seeds showed a possible benefit that needs confirmation. |
| Saw palmetto | A large U.S. trial (CAMUS, published in JAMA in 2011) found that even increasing doses were no better than placebo for urinary symptoms. |
| Pygeum | Older, small studies suggest a modest effect; better evidence is limited. |
Supplements can interact with medications and can delay a proper diagnosis. Use them, if at all, alongside your doctor's advice, not instead of it.
